Purpose of Facility: The provision of Primary Education
 
Mission Statement of the School:
St.Joseph’s N.S Leitir is a co-educational, Catholic, Primary school which serves to provide a well-ordered, caring, happy and secure atmosphere where the intellectual, spiritual, physical, moral and cultural needs of the pupils are identified and addressed.
While St. Joseph’s is a school with a Catholic ethos, it also has due recognition for all other religions and will strive to promote individually and collectively, the professional and personal development of teachers through staff development programmes.
St. Joseph’s will encourage the involvement of parents through home/school contacts and will endeavour to enhance the self-esteem of everyone in the school community and to imbue in pupils respect for people and property and to encourage in them the idea of being responsible.
St Joseph’s  will promote gender equality amongst the teachers and pupils.

The School motto is:              
                      “Caring, Sharing and Working Well”
 
Brief History of the School Facility:
The current building was opened in 1964, replacing an existing stone building.  It has today, as it always had two mainstream teachers.  It also has today the services of a resource teacher based in the school, a part-time learning-support teacher and two special needs assistants.  St. Josephs has a vibrant forward thinking school community with strong links with the board of management, parents and local community.

2007 Award of third Green flag from An Taisce
Regular participation in the “write a book” project
All-Ireland Boxing Titles- two students
All Ireland girls football medal winner
Regular Cumann Na mBunscol Participation-1995 West Mayo title
Clare Island trip-award for winning small school football blitz
Active ongoing fundraising (cake sale, sale of work etc) for St. Vincent De Paul, Concern and Trocaire
